| I was contacted by Ann Rambaud, BCCA's Southern California Rescue Representative, and asked to check on a possible beardie at the Kern County Pound who had been mistakenly identified as an Old English Sheepdog. When I arrived, I discovered a 3-4 month old white & brown beardie mix female puppy, bouncy, barky and adorable. Since she was definitely not a full beardie, Ann agreed we should try to place her through BONE. Through BONE, we located a potential home in Northern California with Kathy Bookbinder and her son, Ben. After waiting for the hold period to elapse, I went to the Pound on Saturday and adopted this puppy who had been named "Lucky" by the BONE group. The Kern County Pound is a kill shelter and so overcrowded they would not guarantee this pup would not be put down within 24 hours of the expiration of her hold period. By the time I adopted her, she was dirty, wet and very depressed. After a vet visit, a bath, and lots of attention from me and my two dogs, she transformed back into a bouncy, self-confident, pretty pup who went home with her new loving owners on Thursday. By all reports they are thrilled with Lucky (they decided to keep the name), leaving me with a warm and grateful feeling that we had been able to save this precious pup. - Teri Stock |
