At the time that Henry was evaluated in the shelter:
We had him out of cage, walked him up and down the aisle.
He is full of energy, spunky, and has very nice white teeth which
he allowed us to look at. He allowed all four paws to be picked up
without objection. He has very few manners, i.e., sit, stay,
heel (NO heeling knowledge at all, acted like he never heard
the word, BUT - he is young and full of fun
(and hasn't been trained), and in a strange place! All that
was on his mind was "where is the EXIT DOOR". The time spent
with him showed that he was sweet, trainable, and just occupied with
the other barking dogs and wishing to escape THAT place.
His fur is soft, multi-colored on one leg (white/gray/tan
wonderful splotches of color).
How he found his new home - as written by Nicole 7/16/00
First, I met with Sherri, from OES rescue about 1/2 way between Houston
and
Dallas. The OES rescue, most notably Sherri and Cindy, have been
remarkable
in all they've done for this boy.
| Cindy pulled him from the shelter for us, had him kenneled, groomed,
and neutered, then brought him to Sherri's home, and Sherri then fostered
for a couple of nights and brought him to me!
On top of all that, they insist that Lone Star Rescue (the Houston OES
rescue) is picking up all of the costs they incurred for Henry - despite
my pleas to let BONE reimburse them!! |
Cindy with Henry |
Henry is everything they told me and more! What an absolute sweetheart
he is. He's been through a lot, but was very easygoing and mellow
for the trip. No car sickness either! (and I discovered that
he seems to have a weakness for McD's french fries... I guess I'm a bad
influence on our dogs, eh?)
 |
Most of the trip, he was either sliming my mobile phone, or resting
his head or paw on my lap. Poor Max was stuck in the back seat as
Henry wouldn't let him come up front too. And Max is most always
in the front seat. I think he was thrilled to learn that Henry wasn't
going to be staying with us.. |
WE arrived at one of the potential homes (and potential foster), and I
had the other potential adopter meet us there too. So, by the time
Henry, Max and I arrived, both potential homes were ready and waiting to
meet him. Both loved him to bits!!
| However, after evaluating the circumstances of both homes, we came
to a common conclusion on which was best for Henry at this time.
Both would make fantastic homes for any dog! But, Janet, the one
who took Henry home with her in the end, has a 10 day trip to Colorado
starting tomorrow on which she'll be taking Henry. |
 |
I was concerned initially about Henry leaving for more travel after
all he's been through... but then discovered there are also some huge advantages
to his trip to Colorado. He'll have at least 10 days of solid bonding
time with his new owner and family. They're driving to Colorado and
will be staying with a close friend (who was also present at today's meeting).
Henry with Janet |
It seems rare that a pup would have the luxury of such an extensive
bonding period of one-on-one time. And they're already planning all
kinds of activities they can do with Henry out there. Plus, the friend
has a good vet in that area since she also has dogs - which is necessary
since Henry still has stitches from his neutering that will need to be
removed. |
When they return, however, I have been promised a full report... :)
I think he'll really love his new home.
