Buffy from Medford Oregon
Buffy made the trip from Oregon to Ohio June 10th. |
Jim Sullivan had been working with a local Humane Society for some
time (since Early April) and had asked BONE to search for a home.
Her previous owner was told she was a Beardie/Wheaten mix. She is a
widow lady who is suffering from terminal cancer and had to move into an
assisted living facility that does not allow dogs. Buffy was turned into
our local Humane Society because it is a "no-kill" shelter and we were
called in as the local "Beardie Rescue" people
When "Buffy" was turned in to the Humane Society, Bill Templeman at
the HS immediately called Jim Sullivan to come and see if we thought
"Buffy" was at least part Beardie. We were convinced that she was, and
agreed to try to find her a new home through "Bone Rescue". Bill suggested
that rather than leave her at the shelter, he would take her home with
him, giving us time to see what we could do
One day, Mary Anderson Boyer had contacted Glenn Short (BCCA regional
Rescue) telling of their loss of their Wolfie. And the fact that
this loss resulted in her husband "DJ" literally having a "Broken Heart"
- ending up in the hospital for bypass surgery. She wanted to find
him another beardie or neardie to help him recover. After seeing the photos
of Wolfie ( a brown boy) , Glenn thought of Buffy and passed the information
of this possible home to Jim and also Lisa Wahoff who works with BONE in
the Columbus area (not far from the Boyer's home).
| Jim Sullivan remarked that it was not easy for Bill Templeman to end
his fostering of Buffy. "When we did find a good home, he (Bill) was reluctant
to let her go. I convinced him that the Anderson/Boyers were good
folks and would love her as he did and would take good care of her. When
I went to get her, to send her to her new home, he had a bag of goodies
all packed and ready to go, including some tranquilizers to ease her fears
on the flight to Ohio!" Adding that Bill "went far and beyond what
would be expected and I want to give credit where due. From what
I've read on both BDL and Bone, not all shelter people are so caring and
helpful." |
Buffy is Happy |
The task of transporting Buffy to Ohio was resolved when Billy Smart
offered to fly with Buffy (using her status with the airlines). Jim
and Gwynn Sullivan brought Buffy to Joanne and Marty Johnson (a trip of
150 miles) who then relayed her to Billie Smart in Puyallup, Washington
( a 200 mile drive) - Billie then going to the airport and flying to Columbus
Ohio (an all night flight). At 10 AM the next morning, Lisa Wahoff
met Billie and took Buffy to Mary Anderson Boyer (another drive of some
50 miles).
 |
Mary surprised her husband DJ with Buffy. And Buffy had her first
"Tea Party" to celebrate this happy ending and new Beginning |
Mary wrote this about Buffy's first day:
She is a very very good girl. DJ is just infatuated. She has met all
our friends and most all of our friend's dogs now. She met some of the
neighbors, and my cats are hiding at the moment! We had a nice visit with
Lisa, and she will be visiting us sometime in the future.
Buffy likes to ride in the truck (Trooper). She jumps right in and
takes over the front passenger seat! (She's still a bit young to be driving!)
I will send more pictures as soon as possible. Buffy is definitely a house
dog. After she
pees, she bolts for the door! And she is very quiet, you were right.
She made herself a niche between two sofas by squeezing into a small
space, which widened it, so she is a creative doggie too! She has attached
to me well for only 24 hours and is glued to my side when on a lead! |

More notes
I've had nothing but good luck since Buffy arrived and many
doctor appointments to go to!
The story of Buffy is the best. We love to tell
it. She is the sweetest, cutest little thing. She has me trained now to
her routine! We go outside together about 6:30-7:00 a.m., and she does
her "business" and wants to come directly back into the house. Next, she
wants a cookie, which she gets. Then she "retires" to HER ROOM for the
rest of the day. I am then to prepare her first meal of the day, which
she will only eat in HER ROOM! ... on the sofa! It is an L-shaped sofa,
and she walks around on the top of the back ... like the cats do. She has
several spots staked out for the day, but her favorite spot is in the corner
of the sofa, as high upon the pillows as she can get. She makes a little
nest and naps there until something else interesting happens! She is eating
well, and I discovered a tip for you. If you have a finicky eater, try
this: Mix some DRY dog food with about a teaspoon of Arrowroot and add
some warm water. Mix well, and the dog will eat it up! Buffy eats about
.75/cup twice a day.
Buffy is always so glad to see me. Now, if I happen
to be gone a long while from home, she jumps all over me, licking me all
the while, when I arrive. She is not so affectionate with David, though.
In fact, she is deathly afraid of men, which is odd because she was fostered
with men. I am wondering if she might have been treated harshly before
B.O.N.E. people got possession of her. DJ is very patient with Buffy, so
I'm sure she will change after a few more weeks. She won't come to him
like she rushes to me, but she does let him pet her on the sofa. She is
mostly at my side everywhere I go in the house. She has adapted well to
the cats so far, only nipping at them when they are inappropriate. As she
is an unknown quantity to them, they have to learn their limits. All is
going VERY WELL, and we LOVE Buffy. She is in her forever home.
David's birthday is this Saturday, and Buffy is
the gift! We also had a little Welcome party for Buffy and she received
a rhinestone collar and lead, plus several other toys. Oh, yes ... toys
... she is now playing with her orange porcupine toy. Wolfie would never
play with any toys, and he didn't like tug of war or Frisbee or anything.
Buffy is so cute with that toy. The squealer is now missing. I hope she
didn't swallow it! Doggie playtime is about 6:00, soon after her evening
meal, right before TV time and then bed. (No, I don't think we are obsessive!)
So, in conclusion, you will probably have to read
more than you ever wanted to know about Buffy now! I am going to clip her
and try her in a bath soon. I thought I'd let her get use to some of our
habits first. Oh, and she occasionally barks now! Bill said she was a talker,
so we are patiently waiting. Hello to all. Buffy is HOME! Mary
