Barney - Ohio

Has a Home

Barney was adopted June 5, 2001 As with many of our rescues this poor boy was bounced around quite a bit and after I met Diane and Megan I knew that they would give Barney the very best home possible. Barney is now on prednisone to help decrease the inflammation of his trachea etc. due to the nasty kennel cough he picked up at the shelter.

Note from Diane:
Barney is great!! We are all adapting really well to each other! You were absolutely right...he is SO sweet!! He has gotten a lot perkier, more playful, more relaxed, he is so polite! He is not eating as much as I would
like...he did great yesterday with his dry food (with chicken broth and a > little shredded cheese in it!) but he was barely interested in it this morning. He showed lots of interest in everyone else's breakfast, though! Any recommendations for another dog food or should I just keep offering until he gives in? He is taking the medicine in cheese cubes enthusiastically. My biggest worry is that his cough is worse. Is it running the normal course or should I call my vet?? It is so sad when he starts playing and then the coughing starts or when he tries to eat, maybe the
dog food may bother his throat and he coughs.... I feel so bad for him!

Last night when we were walking him, Megan said "you know, Mom, we got
really lucky that Lisa called us about Barney instead of somebody else!" I was worried she might be disappointed because he wasn't a puppy, but she recognizes that he needed and deserved a loving family and what a terrific animal he is and she appreciates those things. She has a
really big heart, especially for animals! So, yes, Meg is happy with him! And he with her!
Thanks for sending the new medicine; we'll keep you updated!

Original Story: 6/3/01

Barney aka Beethoven was rescued from an Ohio Shelter. Barny was a found as a stray and turned into the shelter. He was adopted out for one day then returned because he had kennel cough. This shelter does not treat kennel cough and is full, this loving pooch was scheduled to be euthanized until one generous shelter worker contacted me to get him into BONE.
Barney is a beardie/terrier mix who is goofy, clumsy and very very sweet and loving. Barney is around 3 yrs old, good in the house, car (house broken) and good with kids. He is currently being fostered by a person who has no other pets due to his kennel cough however he is said to be good with other dogs. He is a bit matted but lets you brush him.

He loves to play with his new stuffed crab! He is so sweet that I can't imagine anyone turning him back into the shelter! Barney made a trip to the vet and is now on antibiotics, cough medicine (as needed) and has had a shot of steriods. He is neutered, heartworm negative and will need to have a distemper booster in mid June. He does not have a bad case of the crud and does not cough often but needs to be isolated until he is not longer coughing or contagious.
